Exercise 1.5: Visualising Assignment 6

For this assignment I have decided to build upon what I think is going to be the subject of my Assignment 1, the Toadsmoor Valley near Stroud.

I have chosen this valley partly because I live in it but mainly because I only moved here two years ago and it is the first time that I have lived in the countryside.  Living in the country is very different to city living, one appreciates the coming and going of seasons much more and of the impact, and power, that nature and land have over mankind.  This learning has created a sense of awe for me and nowhere more so than in Toadsmore Valley, the place I call home.

For Assignment 1, I am currently expecting to be challenging the conventional notion of beauty and move towards something more abstract, more along the lines of Weston.  And so for this assignment, I have decided that I will return to the more conventional ‘view’ not least because that is what I see every day living in the valley, the overarching view.

I can think of three spots within the valley that have particular views that I associate with the valley and so I intend to begin shooting all three of those views.  I will take a very precise frame from each of the view spots and do so with the aim of producing 12 images for that view, one for each month.  I am not going to tie myself to a specific day as I want to retain the flexibility to capture something unique to that month should it occur, snow for example.

Over the course of the year, I may narrow down the number of views but I may not, I think this could depend on how I intend to display the work at the end of the assignment.  Right now I can see that a book format may help ensure that the images are viewed in the right order but at the same time it would prevent two images being compared side to side and so I am holding off on this decision for the time being and will instead put my focus into ensuing that I capture high quality images with a string focus on technical excellence and precise framing across the set.
